REUBEN SLIDERS RECIPE

A Tale of Two Reubens. That’s what the history of the Reuben sandwich should be called. Both sides of the saga are firm believers and loud proclaimers that they were the inventors of the sandwich. But, as in most cases like this, someone is not being truthful. So, as a result, I don’t really care where the Reuben was invented. I am just happy it was. Because if it wasn’t, two moments in my life would not have occurred. My father would not have made one after church one day, thus introducing the one exception to my “no sauerkraut” lifestyle. And, I wouldn’t have had a surprisingly amazing Reuben at a Buc-ee’s gas station in Fort Worth, Texas. Was either of my two experiences focused on a mini Reuben? Nope, but, hopefully, for one of you, it will be! I present to you: The Reuben Slider.

WHAT IS A REUBEN SANDWICH?

The history of the Reuben sandwich has a few different versions, much like the sandwich itself. Some credit Reuben Kulakofsky, a Jewish Lithuanian-born grocer residing in Omaha, Nebraska, for inventing the sandwich to bring to a weekly poker game in the 1920s. While others applaud Arnold Reuben, the German-Jewish owner of Reuben’s Delicatessen in New York for creating the sandwich. Either way, it is a success. It is considered the most common sandwich on hotel and restaurant menus across the United States. The Reuben Slider takes all those familiar flavors and shrinks them down. Instead of the traditional rye bread, we use King’s Hawaiian Slider Buns.

WHAT DOES THESE REUBEN SLIDERS ON HAWAIIAN ROLLS TASTE LIKE?

Reubens have a few different flavors that stand out, all different, yet all work well together. The meat has a peppery flavor, and there is a strong note of vinegar from the sauerkraut. Top it off with the creamy citrus flavors of the Thousand Island Dressing and you have yourself the perfect Reuben Sandwich!

CAN YOU MAKE MINI REUBENS AHEAD OF TIME?

I would assemble these slider sandwiches not too long before I am ready to eat them. The Thousand Island Dressing and any remaining juices from the sauerkraut could start to drip out and turn the sandwiches into a soggy mess.

CAN YOU FREEZE MINI REUBEN SANDWICHES?

I would rather enjoy these Reubens right out of the oven. Since there is sauerkraut and a creamy dressing in the middle of this sandwich, it would be a mess if you tried to reheat these in the microwave.

WHAT TO SERVE WITH REUBEN SLIDERS?

I think these little Reuben sandwiches can hold their own on the plate. However, if you are looking for a side, maybe some Garlic Potato Wedges.
