Why Should You Make This Recipe

The best recipe is one I can have for a decadent breakfast or simple, but delicious dessert. Aka, “breakfast for dessert.” A couple of my absolute favorites from the blog are my Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce, and Cinnamon Rolls with Heavy Cream. They’re easy to make and especially indulgent when I want an extra special breakfast treat. This baked apple cinnamon rolls recipe is no exception. I know you’ll love it just as much as I do because:

  • The perfect simple, last minute dessert or breakfast. This quick and easy apple cinnamon roll bake comes together in about 10 minutes. All you have to do after mixing all the ingredients is to simply bake it, top with the premade icing and enjoy!
  • Cozy, indulgent and made for holiday breakfasts or desserts. There’s nothing more satisfying than enjoying a deliciously indulgent dessert for breakfast everyone will love. This apple bake with cinnamon rolls is the perfect easy to make breakfast or dessert treat.

Ingredients

This cinnamon rolls and apple pie filling recipe requires only a handful of simple ingredients to make and you probably already have them in your pantry and fridge.

Cinnamon Rolls with Apple Pie Filling

Gather store bought canned cinnamon rolls, canned apple pie filling, light brown sugar, butter and ground cinnamon or apple pie spice.

Substitutions

This apple pie cinnamon roll recipe is as easy to make as it is delicious. Here are my recommended substitutions if you need them.

  • Cinnamon Rolls: Any canned cinnamon rolls such as Pillsbury or Grand’s cinnamon rolls will work well for this cinnamon roll apple cobbler recipe. For regular sized cinnamon rolls, cut them into 4 equal sized pieces. For the larger, or grand sized cinnamon rolls, I suggest cutting them into 6 equal pieces.
  • Apple Pie Filling: Feel free to use any brand of apple pie filling you like or have on hand. I personally love using Lucky Leaf Organic Apple Pie Filling.
  • Brown Sugar: The extra sugar is completely optional for this cinnamon roll apple pie cobbler. Maple sugar or regular granulated sugar will also work well.
  • Ground Cinnamon or Apple Pie Spice: This is optional, but highly recommended for an extra boost of warm and cozy flavor.
  • Butter: The melted butter is used to keep the edges of this apple pie cinnamon rolls dish from drying out too quickly. Feel free to omit if you don’t have any on hand.

Variations

  • Add- ins: Add some crunch to this apple pie cinnamon roll bake by topping this dish with some chopped pecans or walnuts. Mix in some raisins or chopped dried fruit such as apricots for some extra chewiness. For a little chocolate flavor, top with some chocolate chips. I recommend ½ - 1 cup of add-ins for this recipe.
  • Cream Cheese Icing: Top this cinnamon roll apple bake with a drizzle of cream cheese frosting. Mix ¼ cup (59 ml) melted and cooled butter, 4 oz. (113 g) of room temperature cream cheese, 1 teaspoon (5 ml) vanilla extract with 1 cup (120 g) powdered sugar until smooth and well combined.
  • Toppings: A drizzle of icing or caramel sauce, a sprinkle of chopped nuts, a dollop of whipped cream or even a scoop of cold vanilla ice cream really takes this apple cinnamon roll dessert or breakfast over the top.

How To Make

Learn how to make cinnamon rolls and apple pie filling in a few easy steps.

Cinnamon Rolls and Apple Pie Filling (Easy Bake Recipe) - Olives + Thyme (4)
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F (177 C). Lightly grease a 9 x 13 inch (23 x 33 cm) casserole dish with about 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of melted butter. Gather two bowls and a mesh strainer. Pour the entire can of apple pie filling into the mesh strainer. Gently press the sauce through the mesh into one bowl, reserving the apple chunks inside of the mesh strainer. It’s fine if some sauce still coats the apples. Transfer the apples into the second bowl, cut any larger pieces into chunks and set aside.
  2. Open both cans of cinnamon rolls. Remove the icing packets and set aside for topping after the cinnamon roll cobbler is done baking. Cut the cinnamon rolls in 4 or 6 pieces. Transfer the cinnamon roll pieces into a large mixing bowl. Top the cinnamon rolls with light brown sugar, spices and the apple pie filling sauce. Mix gently to combine everything, making sure each cinnamon roll piece is coated with the apple pie filling, sugar and spices.

  1. Transfer the apple pie filling and cinnamon rolls into the prepared baking dish. Top with the reserved apples, making sure to gently press each of the apple chunks into the nooks of the cinnamon rolls. Drizzle the edges of the dish with the melted butter.
  2. Bake the apple cinnamon rolls for 45 - 50 minutes or until the center pieces of cinnamon rolls are no longer doughy. This is easily checked by scooping a small portion out of the center. If the dough is fluffy, it’s finished baking. If the cinnamon roll is doughy, bake for an additional 5 - 10 minutes. Start checking around 40 minutes. Cool the apple cinnamon roll casserole on a cooling rack for 15 minutes. Drizzle the reserved icing from the icing packets and enjoy!

How To Make Ahead, Store and Reheat

  • Make Ahead: Assemble all the components of this recipe up to the baking step. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and store in the fridge up to one day in advance. Then, uncover, bake and enjoy.
  • Store: Fully cool the baked cinnamon rolls with apple pie filling. Cover the dish with plastic wrap or store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 -3 days.
  • Reheat: Reheat the apple pie and cinnamon roll cobbler by baking it in a 350 F (177 C) oven until warmed though or scoop your desired amount into a microwave safe bowl and heat to your desired temperature.

M’s Expert Tips

  • Evenly cube the cinnamon rolls: For regular sized rolls, cutting each cinnamon roll into 4 pieces works great. For larger, “grand” sized cinnamon rolls, cut them into 6 pieces.
  • Use a 9x13 casserole dish. For this recipe use a 9 x 13 inch (23 x 33 cm) oven safe dish. If you need to use a smaller dish, cut the recipe in half and bake this in an 8 x 8 (20 cm) dish for about 30 - 35 minutes.
  • Customize to your tastes. Feel free to add in nuts, chocolate chips or even pieces of dried fruit. Have fun with the flavors in this cinnamon roll bake.
  • Top with your favorite toppings. Although this dish tastes amazing without extra toppings, a drizzle of icing or caramel sauce, a sprinkle of chopped nuts, a dollop of whipped cream or even a scoop of cold vanilla ice cream really takes this apple cinnamon roll dessert over the top.

FAQs

The dish is enhanced by the addition of the brown sugar, apple pie spice and butter, but these are optional. Make this a 2 - ingredient apple cinnamon roll bake by using only the cinnamon rolls and apple pie filling.

I recommend making your own homemade apple pie filling if you prefer to use fresh apples instead of canned apple pie filling. This recipe calls for about 2 ½ - 3 cups of apple pie filling.

Can I use other fruit pie fillings?

Although this recipe would no longer be cinnamon rolls and apple pie filling, this cinnamon roll cobbler is really easy to customize with other fruit pie fillings such as peach, or strawberry.
